Government reaffirms commitment to nuclear energy development.
The Ministry of Information and Media has hosted a high-level awareness meeting focusing on Zambia’s nuclear energy programme, with emphasis on regulation, safety and public awareness.
Speaking at the meeting, Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana reaffirmed government’s commitment to advancing the national nuclear agenda, saying nuclear science and technology will play a critical role in energy diversification and socio-economic transformation. Mr. Kawana stressed that public awareness and transparency are essential in building trust and ensuring national buy-in for the programme.
Mr. Kawana also highlighted the role of the Radiation Protection Authority in regulating nuclear activities and safeguarding the public, workers and the environment from radiation hazards, in line with international standards.
Meanwhile, Radiation Protection Authority Executive Director Boster Siwila, said the Authority is engaging with Permanent Secretaries to deepen understanding of its regulatory mandate within Zambia’s nuclear energy programme. Mr. Siwila said the engagement aims to promote dialogue, align expectations and guide approaches to public, community and industry engagement on nuclear safety and radiation protection.
