Government intensifies annual fish Ban in Isoka district

Government has intensified enforcement of the annual fishing ban in Isoka District of Muchinga Province following the seizure of illegal fish during routine patrols.

Isoka District Fisheries and Livestock Coordinator Motive Katema revealed that officers on January 10, 2026, confiscated 10 kilogrammes of assorted dry fish from three individuals who were found trading during the closed fishing season.

Mr. Katema explained that the fishing ban, which runs from December 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026, is intended to protect fish stocks during the peak breeding period to ensure sustainability.

He noted that resistance to the ban has been minimal despite fishing being a key source of income in the district. Mr. Katema said enforcement focuses on sensitisation, training, and regular patrols rather than the use of force.

However, he cited limited manpower as a challenge and appealed for support from other government departments, while also calling for early community sensitisation ahead of future fishing ban periods.
