2-Year-Old Drowns in Flooded Sitting Room in Kuku Compound
A night of heavy rain turned tragic in Lusaka’s Kuku Compound after a two-year-old girl drowned when rainwater flooded her family’s sitting room as she slept. The victim, Loveness Gwanda, died in the early hours of today after water quietly filled the house, submerging furniture before the danger was noticed.
Police say the incident occurred between 01:00 and 02:00 hours and was reported to Misisi Police Post by the child’s mother, Chisala Kalusha, aged 32. Investigations indicate that Kalusha had left the child sleeping in the sitting room with her siblings before going to bed as heavy rains pounded Lusaka.
At around 02:00 hours, the mother woke up and found the sitting room submerged, with sofas already covered by water. In the panic that followed, it was discovered that the two-year-old had drowned. The child was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the incident and said the body has been deposited at the UTH Mortuary, while investigations have been launched to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.
