Former Finance Minister and FDD Leader Edith Nawakwi Dies at 66.

Zambia's first female Minister of Finance and leader of the opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), Edith Nawakwi, has died at the age of 66.
Ms. Nawakwi made history in 1998 by becoming the first woman to serve as Minister of Finance in both Zambia and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
Born in 1959 in Mwenzo, Northern Province, she built a distinguished career in politics and economics, holding several ministerial positions under President Frederick Chiluba between 1992 and 2001.
She held a degree in Agriculture Economics and Business Management from the University of Zambia and a postgraduate diploma from Imperial College London.
Despite personal tragedies, including the loss of her daughter in 2013, Nawakwi remained a prominent and resilient figure in Zambian politics until her passing.
Meanwhile, President Hakainde Hichilema, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Finance Minister, Madam Edith Zewelani Nawakwi.
Speaking through his Facebook page, President Hichilema extended heartfelt condolences to Nawakwi's family, the FDD fraternity, her colleagues, friends, and the nation at large.
He says the nation is united in thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
And TONSE Alliance has expressed deep sorrow over the untimely death of FDD President Edith Zewelani Nawakwi.
PeP President and TONSE Alliance Spokesperson, Sean E. Tembo, issued a statement extending condolences on behalf of the Alliance to Nawakwi’s family, friends, and colleagues.
Mr Tembo described the late Nawakwi as a courageous and determined leader who inspired many, especially women, to pursue political leadership.
He notes that despite facing persecution for holding those in authority accountable, Nawakwi remained steadfast in her advocacy until her final days.
Mr Tembo emphasized that Nawakwi died a heroine, having dedicated her life to serving the Zambian people and fighting against autocracy.
Meanwhile, Former Information Minister Chishimba Kambwili has described the late FDD President and Zambia’s first female Finance Minister, Edith Nawakwi, as "a man in a woman’s skin."
Mr Kambwili said the late Nawakwi was a fearless leader who knew her rights and fought for humanity.
Acknowledging her strong leadership, he noted that Nawakwi made history in 1998 by becoming Zambia's and the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) first female Finance Minister.
