EU PLEDGES $2.3 BILLION FOR LOBITO CORRIDOR LINKING ZAMBIA AND ANGOLA
The European Union has committed $2.3 billion to the Lobito Corridor project, a transport and logistics route linking Zambia to Angola’s Atlantic ports. The announcement, made in early January 2026, is expected to significantly boost trade and economic activity in the region.
The corridor is designed to improve road, rail, and port infrastructure, providing Zambia and other inland countries with faster access to global markets. Officials emphasized that modernizing the corridor will enhance regional integration and economic competitiveness.
Zambian trade authorities have welcomed the EU’s funding, noting that the corridor will reduce transport costs, improve export efficiency, and create jobs along the route. Projects under the initiative will prioritize sustainability and local workforce development.
Economic analysts suggest that the Lobito Corridor could become a key enabler for Zambian mining and agricultural exports, strengthening the country’s participation in international trade while attracting additional foreign direct investment.
Government spokespersons highlighted that the EU funding reflects confidence in Zambia’s regional leadership role and its commitment to ensuring infrastructure projects are executed efficiently and transparently.
