ERB ATTRIBUTES FAST DEPLETING ELECTRICITY UNITS TO HIGHER CONSUMPTION.
The Energy Regulation Board has attributed the fast depletion of prepaid electricity units to increased consumption following improved power supply across the country. The remarks were made during the board’s first quarter media engagement for 2026, officiated by Director General Elijah Sichone.
The regulator clarified that there has been no increase in electricity tariffs since November 1, 2025, after the approval of ZESCO Limited application at the end of October 2025. It dismissed suggestions of external influence in tariff adjustments, stating that tariff determination remains strictly its mandate.
The ERB indicated that investigations into complaints from consumers have already started and expressed confidence that the matter will be concluded within the set timeframe. The board also noted that the recent severe drought reduced water levels in reservoirs, highlighting Zambia’s heavy reliance on hydropower, which accounts for more than 80 percent of installed generation capacity. It further encouraged the media to verify information with the regulator before publishing energy-related stories.
