END CHILD MARRIAGE NOW — PRESIDENT HICHILEMA URGES AFRICA TO ACT
President Hakainde Hichilema has called for bold and decisive action across the African continent to end child marriage, describing the practice as a serious violation of human rights.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, President Hichilema said child marriage deprives girls of their right to education and access to proper health care, while deepening poverty and weakening national economies.
The Head of State, who serves as the African Union Champion on Ending Child Marriage, emphasized that eliminating the practice must be fully integrated into Africa’s humanitarian and development agendas.
He noted that child marriage not only limits opportunities for young women but also reduces productivity and undermines sustainable development efforts across the continent.
President Hichilema stressed that Africa’s long-term growth and prosperity depend on safeguarding the rights, dignity, and future of girls, urging member states to translate commitments into concrete action.
