ECZ URGES ALL STAKEHOLDERS TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS AND MOBILISE ELIGIBLE ZAMBIANS TO REGISTER AS VOTERS
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has called on all stakeholders to help raise awareness and encourage eligible citizens to register as voters. This appeal was made by ECZ Chairperson, Mrs. Mwangala Zaloumis, SC, during a press briefing on the ongoing voter registration exercise.
Mrs. Zaloumis said the Commission has received several concerns from stakeholders requesting an extension of the voter registration period. She explained that the ECZ is closely monitoring the registration process and will make decisions based on data and operational realities.
The Chairperson also stated that the Commission is working with the Ministry of Home Affairs to find practical solutions to help citizens who have not yet obtained their National Registration Cards (NRCs), as these are needed for voter registration.
Meanwhile, the ECZ has extended the accreditation period for observers of the ongoing voter registration exercise to 31st October 2025. Stakeholders who wish to observe the process can apply through their respective District Registration Officers and are allowed to submit up to three observers per constituency.
Mrs. Zaloumis further announced that the inspection of the 2026 provisional register of voters will take place in February 2026 at all registration centres. She explained that this exercise will allow every registered voter to check and confirm their details before the register is officially certified on 30th April 2026.
The Commission also reminded the public that anyone who registered in 2020 or during the Continuous Registration of Voters remains on the register and does not need to register again. However, those who have changed their location, lost, or damaged their voter’s card should take this opportunity to update their details and obtain a replacement.
The ECZ urged all citizens, civil society groups, and community leaders to work together to ensure that every eligible Zambian is registered and ready to participate in the upcoming elections.
