Community Action Leads to Arrest in Devastating Child Abuse Case.
A community in Pemba District is breathing a sigh of relief after residents in Bampu village apprehended a man who had been on the run, suspected of defiling and murdering his 1-year-3-month-old stepchild. The tragic case has shaken families across Southern Province, drawing widespread outrage and deep sorrow.
According to police, the suspect was captured on Monday by alert and concerned members of the public, who immediately handed him over to authorities.
The heartbreaking incident dates back to 14th November 2025, when a 20-year-old mother from Siamungala Village, Chief Moyo, rushed to report the sudden and suspicious death of her baby. At the time, the child had been left in the care of the stepfather, raising immediate concerns about what had happened in the hours before the child’s passing.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Moono Namalongo confirmed the developments, describing the case as one of the most distressing the region has encountered.
A postmortem conducted on 17th November 2025 revealed the devastating truth: the child died from injuries sustained during sexual assault. Medical findings showed severe damage to the genital and anal areas, including internal injuries to the uterus that resulted in fatal internal bleeding.
The community remains united in grief and is calling for justice for the young life lost, while authorities continue with investigations to ensure the suspect faces the full force of the law.
