CANAL+ Completes US$3 Billion Acquisition of MultiChoice

‎French media giant CANAL+ has officially completed its acquisition of MultiChoice Group in a deal worth about US$3 billion, making the parent company of DStv, GOtv and Showmax a wholly owned subsidiary. The takeover concludes a process that began in 2023 after CANAL+ gradually increased its stake in the South African broadcaster before making an offer to buy the remaining shares.

‎The acquisition follows the completion of all required regulatory approvals and creates one of Africa's largest media and entertainment companies. MultiChoice operates in more than 40 countries across the continent and is one of Africa's leading pay television providers.

‎For millions of subscribers, there will be no immediate changes to DStv, GOtv or Showmax services, with customers expected to continue enjoying their subscriptions as usual while the two companies integrate their operations. The merger is expected to strengthen the company's ability to invest in local content, secure premium sports broadcasting rights and expand its streaming services.

‎Industry analysts say the deal significantly boosts CANAL+'s presence in English-speaking Africa and places the combined company in a stronger position to compete with global streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney+, reshaping Africa's pay television and streaming industry.
