Belemu: Copper Queens Eye Group A Success at WAFCON

Copper Queens defender Margaret Belemu says Zambia's women's national football team is determined to top Group A at the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), and will not underestimate any opponent.
Belemu, who plays for Red Arrows Women, stressed the importance of staying focused throughout the group stage. She acknowledged the strength of fellow Group A opponents Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo, describing both sides as fast and skillful with solid squads.
“We’re focused on finishing at the top of our group. Every match is important, and we’re not underestimating anyone,” said Belemu, who is preparing for her third WAFCON appearance.
The experienced defender said her personal objective is to be a dependable team player and ensure the team’s goal remains well protected throughout the tournament.
Meanwhile, Copper Queens striker Rachael Kundananji has expressed excitement about returning to the continental stage. Speaking during the unveiling of the new CAF WAFCON trophy in Morocco, Kundananji said she is motivated to help the team achieve its targets this year.
Kundananji, who scored during her WAFCON debut in 2018, said her experience will play a key role in Zambia’s performance this time around.
In a related development, Malawi Women’s National Team captain Tabitha Chawinga, who was invited by CAF as a special guest at this year’s tournament, said she believes a Southern African team has what it takes to win the trophy. She tipped either defending champions South Africa or Zambia to emerge victorious, provided they advance beyond the group stage.
The 2025 edition of WAFCON is expected to be highly competitive, with the Copper Queens aiming to build on their historic semi-final finish in 2022.
