Army Orders Illegal Miners to Leave Rufunsa District
The Zambia Army has ordered all illegal gold miners and undocumented immigrants to leave Chief Shikabeta’s chiefdom in Rufunsa District, where unlawful mining activities have intensified. Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele issued the directive during a tour of the affected sites, stating that troops have been deployed to restore order. He added that no mining will be allowed until the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development brings the situation under control.
Lieutenant General Zyeele said the ongoing illegal mining has contributed to rising criminal activities, including drug dealing, which threaten national security. He stressed that the Zambia Army has a responsibility to maintain order and ensure that the country’s resources are protected, noting that illegal mining deprives Zambia of valuable revenue.
Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata also expressed concern over the situation, saying illegal mining has denied the country access to important mineral resources needed for sustainable national development. She reaffirmed government’s commitment to ensuring that all mining activities are conducted within the law.
Rufunsa District Commissioner Richard Mabena praised the minister and the Army Commander for visiting the district and engaging with residents. He said the visit has helped highlight the dangers of illegal mining and the importance of enforcing lawful mining practices.
