AfroMedia Applauds Ambassador Mohamed Idris on UN Appointment Representing Africa

The Pan-African media and journalism initiative AfroMedia has extended warm congratulations to Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Idris on his recent appointment as the Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United Nations and Head of the African Mission in New York.

Anthropological researcher and AfroMedia founder Hassan Ghazaly, alongside the initiative’s team, described the appointment as a reflection of the African Union’s confidence in Ambassador Idris’s distinguished diplomatic career and his extensive expertise in multilateral work, particularly in peace, security, and development across Africa.

Ghazaly noted that the decision underscores the trust and respect that Egyptian diplomacy commands continentally and internationally, calling the appointment a significant milestone in Africa’s ongoing journey to strengthen its voice on the global stage.

“This appointment is not just a personal achievement for Ambassador Idris - it is a collective win for African representation at the highest levels of international diplomacy,” Ghazaly emphasized.

He also paid tribute to the historical role of Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, recalling its pivotal efforts during the era of African liberation. “Egypt was instrumental in supporting African leaders during their struggles for independence, helping bring their voices to the United Nations during colonial times. Many of these figures later became iconic leaders in the Global South,” Ghazaly stated.

The appointment, which comes in the lead-up to the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, serves as a reminder of Egypt’s founding membership in the UN and its enduring contributions to shaping international diplomacy.

Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Idris is no stranger to high-level international representation. He previously served as Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, as well as Egypt’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Representative to the African Union. In 2024, he was appointed by the UN Secretary-General to the Independent High-Level Advisory Board of the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund.

Ghazaly believes this new role for Ambassador Idris will deepen ties between the African Union and the United Nations, while enhancing the continent’s ability to influence global decisions that affect African development, peacebuilding, and sustainability.

About AfroMedia

Founded in February 2021, AfroMedia is a Pan-African initiative under the Global Solidarity Network, operating under the slogan: “The Voice of Egypt… The Voice of Africa.” The initiative seeks to build strong media and journalistic ties among African nations, empower journalists through training and capacity development, and foster accurate and realistic narratives about Africa in both local and international media.

AfroMedia also aims to serve as a communication bridge between African communities - Egyptian and non-Egyptian alike, while supporting collaborative storytelling, strategic media coordination, and education on African affairs for Egyptian media professionals.

“This is a proud moment not only for African diplomacy, but for African media. It reinforces why initiatives like AfroMedia must continue to amplify our shared stories, successes, and aspirations,” concluded Ghazaly.
