8 Illegal Miners Die in Kakawa Tunnel Collapse Amid Police Operation in Mufumbwe

Eight illegal miners have died following a tunnel collapse at the Kakawa Gold Rush site in Mufumbwe District amid ongoing police operations targeting illegal mining.
Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga says the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, June 17, 2025, after miners dug unstable tunnels beneath an anthill.
Mr. Hamoonga says police earlier carried out a clearance operation in Kikonge on June 15, during which seven officers were injured by stone-throwing illegal miners.
He adds that despite the initial clearance, some miners returned using hidden bush paths, leading to the fatal collapse.
Mr. Hamoonga has warned the public, especially youths, against illegal mining, emphasizing the danger and illegality of such activities.
