Zambia And Finland Discuss Climate Solutions

The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment recently held a high-level meeting with Finland's Minister of Foreign Trade and Development, Ville Tavio. Finland’s Ambassador to Zambia, Saana Halien, also attended the meeting, along with a group of experts. The discussions focused on urgent environmental and infrastructure challenges caused by climate change.

The Finnish delegation was welcomed by Zambia’s Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha, Permanent Secretary Dr. Douty Chibamba, and various heads of departments. The meeting covered a wide range of issues related to environmental sustainability and economic growth.

One of the key topics discussed was deforestation. Both parties explored possible solutions to reduce deforestation and promote sustainable land management. Another important point was the establishment of plastic recycling plants, which would not only help in managing waste but also create job opportunities for the local population.

Strategies to address drought and flood challenges were also discussed. With climate change increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, the meeting emphasized the need for improved flood management and drought mitigation efforts. The use of modern meteorological technology and early warning systems was identified as a crucial tool in disaster preparedness and response.

Additionally, the discussion touched on improving environmental management practices to ensure sustainable development. Finland also shared its expertise in renewable energy, encouraging Zambia to diversify its energy sources by reducing reliance on hydropower and adopting solar, wind, and other green energy options.

This meeting marks an important step in strengthening Zambia-Finland cooperation on environmental and climate issues. Both countries expressed commitment to finding practical solutions to protect the environment while fostering economic development.
