LCC Demolishes 78 Illegal Structures Along Kafue Road in Night Operation

The Lusaka City Council (LCC), in partnership with State Police, carried out a demolition exercise on the night of Saturday, 30th August, targeting illegal structures erected along Kafue Road.
The operation began at 22:00 hours and continued into the early hours of Sunday, resulting in the removal of 78 unapproved structures.
LCC Public Relations Manager, Chola Mwamba, said the structures included 46 unauthorised mobile money booths and 32 makeshift shelters.
Authorities said the affected sites had become known for harbouring criminal activity, particularly targeting motorists during night-time hours, raising safety concerns among residents and commuters.
Ms. Mwamba noted that the demolition followed several prior enforcement efforts, including the issuance of notices to the owners of the structures and that the most recent notices were served eight days before the operation, instructing individuals to voluntarily dismantle the structures and remove any goods.
She stated that failure to comply with these directives prompted the Council to proceed with the clearance exercise as part of its broader strategy to restore order, enhance public safety, and support lawful urban development across the city.
In a statement made available to ICU TV, Ms. Mwamba reaffirmed the council’s commitment to enforcing planning regulations and urges members of the public to seek proper authorization before putting up any structures within the city.
