UrbanTransportData Project Opens Doors to African Megacities

Moscow, August 22, 2025 — As part of the IV International Transport Summit in Moscow, the international portal UrbanTransportData for analyzing urban transport infrastructure was officially launched. The platform already includes 32 cities worldwide and integrates about 600 indicators standardized under unified criteria.

The project is unique in its ability to compare transport systems across countries while factoring in their geographical and economic characteristics. It enables deeper insights into global transport trends, the study of innovative practices, and the analysis of current conditions using 50 key indicators.

Major Expansion Welcomes African Capitals

On August 21, the platform achieved its largest expansion to date with 17 new cities joining, more than doubling its coverage. The expansion is particularly significant for Africa, as 10 capitals became participants: Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Banjul (Gambia), Windhoek (Namibia), Kampala (Uganda), Lilongwe (Malawi), Lusaka (Zambia), Nairobi (Kenya), Maputo (Mozambique), Freetown (Sierra Leone), and Harare (Zimbabwe).

Participation offers African megacities the chance to modernize their transport systems. Analysts from the Moscow Transport Complex have developed a methodology enabling cities to collect and systematize transport data. Once aggregated, the data will allow for information exchange, joint research, and solution-oriented collaboration — all supported by the project team.
