Two Dead, Two Injured in Early Morning Crash on Great East Road.

A tragic road crash along Great East Road in the early hours of Wednesday has claimed two lives and left two others seriously injured.

The accident occurred around 02:30 hours and involved a Mazda CX-5 and a Toyota Allion saloon car. According to eyewitness Clever Knack Zulu, the crash happened when the Mazda CX-5 rammed into the Toyota Allion, which was being pushed towards a nearby gas station after running out of fuel.

Three men were pushing the Allion while a female passenger remained seated inside the car. Poor visibility caused by non-functioning streetlights, absence of warning signals from the stranded vehicle, and apparent speeding by the Mazda CX-5 driver contributed to the fatal accident.

Two of the men pushing the vehicle died at the scene from fatal injuries. The third man survived but sustained injuries and was rushed to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital along with the female passenger, who suffered serious spinal injuries. The driver of the Mazda CX-5 escaped with minor scratches and did not require immediate medical attention.

Both vehicles were travelling eastbound from Lusaka's city center towards Chelstone at the time of the crash. The Toyota Allion was extensively damaged following the impact.

The incident has highlighted key safety lessons, including the dangers of pushing a vehicle on the highway under poor visibility conditions, the importance of moving stranded vehicles off the road safely, and the need for motorists to observe speed limits, especially at night.

Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the crash. Meanwhile, the public is urged to exercise extreme caution when dealing with vehicle breakdowns on major roads.
