President Hichilema Calls for Peace and Unity in Emotional Address Following the Passing of Former President Lungu

President Hakainde Hichilema has delivered a powerful and heartfelt address to the nation, marking seven days since the death of Zambia’s Sixth Republican President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu. In his speech, the Head of State called on all Zambians to unite in mourning, honour the late leader with dignity, and reject division or political provocation.
"Zambia is a nation in mourning, not only for the loss of a former Head of State but for the last of the six men who have had the honour of leading our beloved republic," President Hichilema said in a nationally televised message.
Acknowledging the grief that has gripped the country, President Hichilema extended condolences to the Lungu family, the Patriotic Front, and all citizens who held the late president in high regard. He urged citizens to approach this moment with love and compassion, especially toward those who may grieve through anger.
“Our political differences do not make us enemies,” the President said. “They make us participants in a dynamic democracy, brothers and sisters who share a common destiny.”
He further appealed to members of his party, the United Party for National Development (UPND), other political entities, and all national stakeholders to exercise restraint and respond to provocation with maturity and empathy. The President, however, cautioned that while peace is essential, lawlessness will not be tolerated.
“We shall not allow lawlessness, disorder, or anarchy to take root,” he emphasized. “We are a nation built on the rule of law, and that law must prevail, without fear or favour.”
As a Christian nation, the President called on Zambians to turn to God for healing and guidance. “Let love lead. Let unity bind us. Let our conduct reflect the greatness of our spirit as Zambians,” he declared.
In closing, President Hichilema reaffirmed his commitment to serving all citizens regardless of political affiliation or background and asked Zambians to allow the late President Lungu to be honoured with the dignity befitting his office.
“Let us show the world that even in sorrow, Zambians respond with grace, dignity, and an unshakable belief that good shall always triumph over evil.”
