Government Prioritizes Defense Reforms to Expand Women’s Participation.

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating reforms that will expand the participation of women in Zambia’s defense sector.

Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma made the announcement at the Zambia Women Air Force Golden Jubilee Parade, where he emphasized that investments in specialized training will remain central to government policy. He said training programs will focus on strengthening women’s technical, operational, and strategic leadership capacity.

Mr. Lufuma stressed that the inclusion of women in defense is not simply a matter of representation but a strategy to build a stronger and more adaptive security system.

“Gender equality in the security sector is not optional. It is a cornerstone of national resilience and stability,” he said.

The Minister’s remarks come at a time when Zambia, like many countries, is working to align its defense structures with international standards on gender equity in security.

At the same event, Zambia Air Force Commander Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni announced the start of a new policy process. He directed the Administration Department and the Gender Office to begin developing a Zambia Air Force Gender Policy, aimed at formalizing support systems and creating more opportunities for women across ranks.

Highlighting the contribution of women in the armed forces, Taskforce Commander for the Women Golden Jubilee, Brigadier General Mwinga Sheyo, praised their dedication and service. She noted that women have continued to play a vital role in safeguarding national security despite facing systemic barriers over the years.

The Zambia Women Air Force Golden Jubilee Parade was held to mark fifty years of women’s service in the Air Force, a milestone that military leaders say demonstrates progress but also underscores the need for further reforms.

With the new pledges, government and defense leaders say the next phase will focus on institutional reforms, gender policies, and training initiatives designed to ensure women are not just participants but leaders in national defense.
