Zambia to Host First Indian Pharmaceutical Plant in Africa

Zambia is set to establish its first pharmaceutical manufacturing plant following a multi-million-dollar investment deal sealed with India’s Akuma Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited.
The plant, to be located in Lusaka’s Multi-Facility Economic Zone, will focus on producing essential medicines, reducing the country’s heavy reliance on drug imports, and cutting health sector costs.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Lusaka earlier this week, Ashok Saroha, President of International Business for Akuma Drugs and Pharmaceuticals, confirmed that the groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for September 2025, with construction expected to be completed within 12 months.
“This Zambian pharmaceutical facility will be our company’s first plant in Africa, and it will not only supply Zambia but also serve neighboring countries such as Malawi, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, and Namibia,” Mr. Saroha said.
The company, renowned in India for manufacturing a wide range of essential drugs, pledged to ensure the plant contributes significantly to strengthening the region’s healthcare system.
Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, welcomed the investment, describing it as a major milestone in improving Zambia’s access to essential medicines.
He commended President Hakainde Hichilema for spearheading the initiative, noting that the partnership was born out of the President’s visit to India, where he engaged with top pharmaceutical firms.
“This development is timely as it will guarantee a consistent supply of medicines to our health facilities while supporting government’s vision to improve healthcare delivery across the country,” Dr. Lishimpi said.
