the teacher and the stick
A stick was a very good friend and aid to a teacher. It was highly reckoned and feared by the pupils. One person remarked that an African child can only learn by a stick. This person was trying to underscore the fact that many African children could not easily heed to word of mouth but to the stick. And I know to a very high extent you agree with this him. Sometime back it’s not any other form of punishment that used to scare pupils from school offenses such as absenteeism, fighting, noise making etc. It was the stick [corporal punishment]. Some people who would have stopped schooling completed because of fear of the stick.
The question is, was the stick bad? Or was it good? In my opinion the stick was good. These other punishments like picking papers, moping the floor, digging your height and bra-bra don’t stop pupils from offending once more. Some feel very happy when they are sent away from class as punishment, they don’t want to learn. Yet the stick instills an immediate fear and it’s that fear that stops them from offending again.
But as there are always two sides of a coin, almost everything has advantages and disadvantages, the good part and the bad part. Even the medicine we take while it heals us it gives us some side effects. One person said, too much of everything is bad. I will not hide from you the disadvantage of the stick some teachers over used it. Maybe I can use the word abused it. They use to assort the pupils and cause them serious body harm. Some had ill motives and forced pupils to do certain things they were no suppose, even violet their rights by beating and threatening them with sticks.
I said my opinion is that, the stick is good but it’s too risky to trust the teachers with it. So the move to remove the stick from the teachers' hand was good. We should only nurse the disadvantages of it.
