Sikongo Town Council Assists Former Inmates with Reintegration Support

The Social Welfare Department of Sikongo Town Council has provided reintegration assistance packages to seven (7) former inmates in a move aimed at promoting their rehabilitation and smooth return to society.

The support packages included key agricultural inputs such as vegetable seeds, blankets, and bags of mealie meal to help the beneficiaries restart their lives and become self-reliant members of their communities. The ex-offenders will also be linked to the Community Development Farmer Support Program to enhance their economic empowerment and long-term stability.

Sikongo District Commissioner, Mr. Imbuwa Mwalye, presided over the handover ceremony and encouraged the beneficiaries to make responsible use of their freedom and apply the skills they acquired while incarcerated to improve their standards of living. He stressed that the government’s support symbolized acceptance and a fresh start, urging them not to feel marginalized.

“The time you spent in prison was a rehabilitation process to help you repent and learn from your mistakes. Now that you are free, we expect you to be responsible citizens who will contribute positively to the community,” Mr. Mwalye said.

Meanwhile, Sikongo District Police Officer-in-Charge, Assistant Superintendent Mwanagala Mufungulwa, cautioned the recipients against engaging in activities that could result in reoffending. He assured them of continued police guidance and support whenever necessary, underscoring the importance of maintaining law-abiding lives.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Pelekelo Simangolwa expressed appreciation for the assistance. He applauded the government for considering their well-being and sustainability during the reintegration process, adding that the support would greatly assist them in reestablishing themselves within the community.
