Overspeeding Minibus Kills Four In Chongwe District

Four people have died after a Toyota Quantum minibus carrying 11 people overturned along Great East Road in Chongwe District. The accident happened yesterday, 9th September, 2026, around 18:00 hours in the Namgwenya area when the minibus, registration number BBE 8349ZM was travelling to Lusaka. 

Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the driver lost control of the vehicle after allegedly driving at an excessive speed.

"The driver lost control due to overspeeding, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturned several times," Chilabi said.

Chilabi said four people sustained fatal injuries and were rushed to Chongwe District Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival. 

"Five other passengers sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the hospital for treatment while two other passengers sustained minor injuries were treated and discharged," Chilabi stated.

He added that the bodies of the four deceased passengers at the Chongwe District Hospital mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem examination. 

"An inqury file has been opened, and investigations into the accident are on," Chilabi said.
