Mulungushi Textiles Begins Test Runs, Marking Industrial Revival
The Zambia-China Mulungushi Textile (ZCMT) plant in Kabwe has commenced test runs, signalling a major step towards the revival of Zambia’s textile industry and the country’s broader industrialisation agenda.
The development follows a US$140 million investment in modern machinery, equipment, and cotton out-grower systems aimed at restoring local textile manufacturing capacity. Once fully operational, the factory is expected to create over 500 direct jobs and stimulate economic activity across the cotton value chain.
Mulungushi Textiles is a joint venture between the Governments of Zambia and China, established to resuscitate a factory that once played a key role in Zambia’s industrial development. The plant is currently undergoing extensive rehabilitation, with advanced equipment being installed as part of the upgrade.
The Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry has indicated that the public will be invited to witness full test runs ahead of the official commissioning of the facility by President Hakainde Hichilema later this year, underscoring Government’s commitment to industrial growth, job creation, and reduced reliance on imports.
