Local Government PS Urges Contractors to Uphold Standards and Patriotism

Permanent Secretary for Technical Services in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Nicholas Phiri, has voiced concern over the substandard work delivered by some local contractors involved in drainage projects within Lusaka.

Speaking during an inspection of the drainage system in Mumbwa and a visit to the Simon Mwewa Lane market, Mr. Phiri stressed that the government intentionally awards such projects to small and medium local enterprises to encourage their participation in national development.

He, however, expressed disappointment with the quality of work observed, attributing it to a lack of commitment and national pride among certain contractors.

Mr. Phiri emphasized that the success of the decentralisation policy hinges on contractors executing their responsibilities with urgency, professionalism, and a strong sense of patriotism.

In a related development, he cautioned market traders at Simon Mwewa Lane and other city markets against renting out their stalls to third parties.

Mr. Phiri encouraged vendors to work directly with the local authorities when seeking trading spaces in council-regulated markets, rather than engaging informal agents.

The Permanent Secretary reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to overseeing proper market management through effective policy guidance.

He also called for enhanced collaboration between council police and state law enforcement agencies to maintain order and security in market areas.
