Cheshire Homes Zambia has made some milestones in ensuring that children with disabilities get education through inclusive education in mainstream schools.
Cheshire Homes Project Manager Bob Sianjalika has disclosed that 244 children with disabilities which were unknown have been identified while over 6, 000 children have been screened for possible disabilities from Kafue to Livingstone.
He says that interventions have been made by his organization to ensure that children are in school.
Sianjalika who indicated that the project has partnered with 60 schools says that his organization will continue to improve the welfare of children with disabilities by providing facilities that support children to learn freely without any hindrances.
Meanwhile Cheshire Homes Program Director Siame Musonda says inclusive education for children with disabilities will not be undertaken in a hurried manner.
Musonda says that the project will ensure sustainability by providing the learning environment with necessary tools through the construction and rehabilitation of access lamps, inclusive toilets, sub pathways, transparent roofing sheets and improve visibility in classrooms.
He also adds that 60 child to child groups and 60 parent groups have been created in the 60 schools the school has partnered with in order to reduce community misconceptions about children with disabilities.
The European Union funded initiative intends to enroll at least 1, 200 children when the project comes to an end in November, 2017.
