Icu Students Gain Practical Agricultural Skills At Chongwe Agriculture Research Center

CHONGWE—Information and Communications University - ICU students visiting the ICU/ZRDC Chongwe Agriculture Research Center participated in hands-on activities designed to enhance their understanding of livestock management and sustainable farming practices.
The students began their visit by cleaning the cattle kraal and goat house, where they were taught the importance of hygiene in maintaining livestock health. They learned that proper waste management prevents pests and diseases, creating a healthier environment for the animals.
At the piggery, the students assisted in cleaning and feeding the pigs, gaining insight into daily livestock care routines, including feeding schedules and the role of sanitation in animal husbandry.
Additionally, the students engaged in preparing vermicomposting bins, a process that involves recycling organic waste using worms to improve soil quality. This activity provided them with practical knowledge on nutrient recycling and sustainable agricultural practices.
The trip also included tree tagging, where students were introduced to forest management techniques and the importance of monitoring plant growth for environmental sustainability.
The hands-on experience provided students with a comprehensive understanding of agricultural processes, equipping them with practical knowledge that supports both livestock care and environmental conservation.
