Hichilema Opens Zambia’s Expanded 14th National Assembly

LUSAKA, Zambia — President Hakainde Hichilema is today presiding over the ceremonial opening of the First Session of Zambia’s 14th National Assembly, where he is expected to outline the Government’s policy direction and priorities for the 2026–2027 period.

The ceremony is taking place at Parliament Buildings in Lusaka, marking the beginning of parliamentary business under the country’s newly constituted legislature. The official programme includes the National Anthem, prayer, announcements and a presidential address to the House.

The opening comes as the country begins a new parliamentary term following the August 13, 2026 general elections.

The 14th National Assembly has expanded to a total composition of 280 members, following constitutional reforms introduced through the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2025. The expanded House includes elected members, nominated members and representatives under proportional representation arrangements.

President Hichilema is expected to use his address to explain how the Government intends to implement its Grow Zambia Agenda, with particular attention on economic growth, job creation, investment and improved household incomes.

Ahead of the opening, the President called on Parliament to enact laws that promote national unity, expand economic opportunities and improve the lives of citizens.

The President has also emphasised the need for Parliament to work with the Executive and other arms of Government to advance national development.

Following the presidential address, Members of Parliament are expected to debate the policy pronouncements contained in the speech, providing an opportunity for lawmakers to examine the Government’s proposed priorities and implementation plans.

The address is expected to set the tone for the new parliamentary session and provide direction on the Government’s plans for the coming year.

As proceedings unfold, public attention will be on the policies announced by the President and how they are expected to translate into tangible improvements in employment, economic opportunities and the living standards of Zambians.
