Three hundred and ten nurses/midwives graduate

Kasempa, October 30, - three hundred and ten nurses from various schools in north western province have today been conferred as qualified nurses and midwives with diplomas during a graduation ceremony which was held at Mukinge School of nursing.

Officiating at the occasion minister of Health chitalu chilufya implored on newly graduates to be uphold professionalism.

Dr Chilufya called on the graduates not to shun working in rural areas as government will place human capital where there is need.

Dr Chilufya said the figures of maternal deaths between urban and rural areas is broadening because the nurses patient ratio is very poor hence the need to fill up the gaps at the primary health center in rural areas.

"We don't train nurses to work in town only, we want nurses to work where people are, were women and children are dying," he said.

He said government has revolutionized recruitment and will not disadvantage citizen by posting human resource that only stay in rural areas for short period.

Dr chilufya said government is determined to eliminate malaria, epidemic control of HIV/AIDS, reduction of maternal mortality and reducing child mortality and this will only be attained if health care is available at primary level.

And UNFPA country representative Gift Malunga commended government for making significant progress towards the reduction of maternal mortality which is at 398 per 100, 000 live birth from 591 per 100,000 live birth.

Ms. Malunga also noted the reduction of neonatal mortality which is at 24 per 1,000 live births from 26 per live birth.

She said the achievements under the ministry of health have been achieved with the contribution of dedicated and committed nurses and midwives who work under harsh conditions.


The 6th graduation ceremony for midwives and nurses had a combination of three nursing schools on north western namely, mukinge nursing school from kasempa, kaleni nursing school from Inkelege district and solwezi nursing school from solwezi district.
