Poverty gap widening for ZAPD
Kasempa, 31st October 2018
People living with disability are concerned with poverty circle that is persistent with persons with disability.
Zambia Agency for People living with disability Acting Director Julian Mwape says the agency has a challenge of breaking the poverty circle among people with disability because their educational programme are specific to the disabled only.
She said the agency has an educational programme tailored to help persons with disability who can’t afford to pay fees from grade one up to university stage.
Ms Mwape noted that over the years the agency has noted the challenge of which children of persons with disability who are not disabled fail to attend school and remain home helping their disabled parents hence the poverty gap.
Ms Mwape was speaking in kasempa at kikokomene leprosarium where she donated food items to the center.
She said the agency will go back and see how best they can help reduce the challenges and help children of persons with disability.
Ms Mwape also called on persons with disability to suggest income generating activities that will provide them a source of income.
And kikokomene residents appealed to the agency to intervene in the land wrangles that is currently existing in which land meant for persons with disability has been encroached by some residents.
