Church goers live longer

Research in the US has discovered that religious people live longer than non religious ones.
According to the online journal Psycology Today, religious people have been reported to have more robust immune systems ,lower blood pressure and better recovery times from operations.
It says attending church provides many potential health advantages including promotion of a healthier lifestyle , improved stress management and better social support.
“Such benefits could explain why religious Americans live longer…” the journal says.
However the journal says very low life expectancy was in very religious countries and cited Sub Saharan Africa .
“Plagues of malaria, parasites, dengue fever, cholera, diarrheal diseases, HIV/AIDS etc .,lop decades off life expectancy that is below 60 years for most of these countries,” the journal reports.
The British online newspaper, www.dailymail.co.uk has also published a story that claims that religious people live longer.
“In 2006, university researchers at the University of Texas discovered that the more often you go to church ,the longer you live,” the Mail says.
The Mail also says scholars at the University of California, Los Angeles, observed that college students involved in religious activities were more likely to have better mental and emotional health than those who do not.
“Religious attendance is associated with adult mortality in a graded fashion : there is a seven year difference in life expectancy between those who never attend church and those who attend weekly,” the Mail says.
It says exactly the same result had been reported in the American Journal of Public Health which had studied nearly 2000 older Californians for five years.
The mail says those who attended religious services were 36 per cent less likely to die during that half decade than those who did not.
“Even those who attended a place of worship irregularly – implying a less than ardent faith-did better than those who did not attend,” the Mail said.
