A hair dresser in kasempa district said the drastically drop in the number of customers going to the hair saloon has affected the business negatively.
Ms Mildred Mukonda the proprietor of Easy Baber shop and hair saloon disclosed that she was the first one to open a hair salon in kasempa as far back as 1993and the business was very profitable.
She disclosed that between 1993 up to 2009 the business of hair salons was very profitable that she managed to build a house, two shops, able to pay school fees for all her children and provide food for the family without any difficulties.
Ms Mukonda said that from 2010 most of the women have resort to plaiting hair extension than going to the dryer machine for perm or wet look.
She said majority of hair dressers who do not have the skills of plaiting hair will soon be completely out of business. She also lamented that most of the people in the area have acquired home hair dryers forcing the number of customers going to the hair salon to drop dawn.
Ms Mukonda recalls that sometimes two days can elapse without any customer going to her hair saloon.
She disclosed that the increase in the prices of chemicals used in the hair saloon coupled with high electricity and water bills has affected the smooth running of the hair salon industry. She disclosed that blowing hair for the customer costs k10 while perming is at k50.
Ms Mukonda disclosed that all creams used in hair salon are not bought locally making the industry difficult to run.
Meanwhile Ms Mukonda disclosed that she plans to venture into other business in future other than hair salon.
