ZAF Brings Hope to Lufwanyama: Defence Minister Commissions Mukumbo Bridge

Joy and celebration filled the air in Lufwanyama District on April 30, 2025, as Minister of Defence Ambrose Lufuma officially commissioned the newly built Mukumbo Bridge, constructed by the Zambia Air Force (ZAF). The bridge, built under ZAF’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, marks the fulfilment of a key Government promise and a major step forward for the community.
Before the commissioning, ZAF Commander Lt Gen Oscar Msitu Nyoni took the Minister on a guided tour of the ZAF Industrial Development Corporation and surrounding farms. An aerial view of ZAF’s farming operations showcased just how seriously the Air Force is taking its role in boosting national food security — a priority set by President Hakainde Hichilema.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Lufuma praised ZAF’s efforts:
“This is more than just a bridge. It’s a bridge to opportunity — connecting people, schools, markets, and services. ZAF has truly delivered.”
Lt Gen Nyoni echoed that sentiment, saying the bridge would ease travel and promote trade and education in the area:
“We’re proud to support development in communities like this one. The Mukumbo Bridge shows what we can achieve when we work together.”
Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo added that all the workers on the ZAF farms are locals, a clear sign that the Air Force is investing in communities:
“This is the President’s vision in action. ZAF isn’t just defending our skies — they’re building our future.”
The event was attended by Chief Lumpuma, Lufwanyama Mayor Annie Kapandula, and other dignitaries. For many residents, the moment was emotional. The bridge means easier access to schools, clinics, and markets — and for the first time in years, a real connection to opportunity.
As one local put it:
“We’ve waited so long for this. Today, the Government showed up — and ZAF made it happen.”
