Woman Allegedly Raped in Chama, Suspect on the Run
A 25-year-old woman of Chama District has allegedly been raped after being forced into a man’s house in Chief Kambombo’s Chiefdom.
Robertson Mweemba, Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, confirmed the incident and said investigations have been launched.
The alleged rape occurred between the night of February 20 and the early hours of February 21, 2026, in Chimwemwe Compound.
According to police, the victim reported that she had gone to the Ma-Groceries area around 21:00 hours on February 20 to drink beer. Around 23:00 hours, while walking home, she allegedly encountered a man who had previously been pursuing her romantically.
Mr. Mweemba said the suspect allegedly grabbed the woman by the neck and forced her into his house where he raped her.
“The victim reported that while walking home around 23:00 hours, she was grabbed by the neck by a man known to her who forcefully took her into his house and raped her,” Mr. Mweemba said.
The woman reportedly attempted to call for help but was unsuccessful. After the assault, the suspect allegedly fell asleep, giving her an opportunity to escape.
Police said the victim complained of pain in her private parts and was issued with a medical report form for examination.
Mr. Mweemba added that a manhunt has since been launched for the suspect, who remains at large.Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
