MESSI BIDS FAREWELL TO ARGENTINA AFTER TWO DECADES OF GLORY

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football closing the book on a 21-year career with the Argentine national team. The move ends more than two decades of national-team duty,  though Messi will continue playing at club level with Inter Miami. The announcement came via an emotional Instagram post on Monday 31st August 2026, in which Messi described it as painful but said he understood that time had come for him to step away.

The 39-year-old leaves as Argentina's all time leading-appearance and scorer, with 125 goals in 207 games. He turned a once-fraught relationship with the national team into one of football's great redemption stories, breaking through with the 2021 Copa América title before captaining  Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, then adding another Copa América crown in 2024.

The final chapter, however, did not end as many would have hoped, as Argentina fell 1-0 to Spain in extra time in this year's World Cup final. Even so, Messi stands amongst the greatest players in the sports history. His retirement announcement follows  reports that he had been weighing the decision for weeks, with the Argentine Football Association reportedly preparing a farewell match to honor his contribution to the national team and give fans a proper send-off to one of the sport's defining careers.
