Lawyers Confirm Representation of Tonga as Detention Extends Beyond 20 Days

Lawyer Josia Kalala has confirmed that Third Liberation Movement President Enock Roosevelt Tonga is being represented by COF Chambers as his detention by police extends beyond 20 days.

Mr Kalala says the legal team is engaging the police and other law enforcement agencies regarding Mr Tonga’s case.

However, he has declined to provide further details on the matter.

Mr Tonga was apprehended on August 17 at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre after reportedly calling on the Electoral Commission of Zambia to suspend the announcement of election results.

Meanwhile, Economic Freedom Fighters President and Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance Council of Presidents member Kasonde Mwenda has questioned the continued detention of Mr Tonga.

Mr Mwenda says authorities should explain why Mr Tonga remains in custody without publicly stating the charge he is facing.

He has called on the authorities to either take Mr Tonga to court or release him, saying his prolonged detention raises concerns about the rule of law and the protection of democratic rights.

The Zambia Police Service has not publicly explained the reasons for Mr Tonga’s continued detention at Kabwata Police Station or disclosed the charges, if any, against him.
